The secret was out. The army had been through the street the night before and taken all the people they could find.
Where she had felt safe and been surrounded by her family was now deserted. Ruined.
The laughter that had echoed throughout the house before was now silent. There was no reason to laugh. No joy or mischief to be shared. Her little brother was missing.
His favourite plush toy was abandoned by the foot of the bed. She picked the toy up. He would never have left it behind if he had a choice.
She heard a noise in the doorway and looked up from the toy she cradled.
