Writing Prompt Friday #2

Welcome to Better Scribe’s Writing Prompt Friday. This is where I will post a prompt (every Friday) for you to use as a writing exercise. You will also get to read my own (unedited) response to the same prompt.Writing Prompts

Your writing prompt is:

Pick a scent.

  • Lemon
  • Cut grass
  • Lavender
  • Rotting food
  • Eucalyptus
  • Wet dog

Now using the scent you have chosen create a small scene.

If you want to take this prompt to the next level after you have written your scene, develop another scene using the same scent but with a different atmosphere or mood.

My response to the prompt:

It had rained the night before and the scent of eucalyptus was heavy in the air. The dirt track showed a faint trail of footprints. There had been no effort to disguise the trail or venture off the path. The hunter had become the hunted and now he was in a rush to find safety before daylight broke the canopy of leaves.

She would also have to search out a safe resting spot, although she didn’t need to avoid the sun. Her eyes flicked to each side and she noticed that the footprints swerved sharply to the left. They ended under a large tree where the earth had been disturbed. She jumped into the tree and lay along a branch. Her eyes were fixated on the soft dirt below and she waited.

My 2nd response to the prompt:

I always loved the scent of eucalyptus trees after the rain. It was refreshing and soothing. The paint brush flowed with ease over the canvas, capturing the essence of the scene before me. The gentle way the light filtered through the canopy above, the birds chirping and feeding their young.

I had finished the painting. All I had to do now was pack up and return home. Sorrow filled me. I didn’t know when I would be back this way, but there was always another adventure, another place to explore and find a perfect spot to paint.

It’s your turn now. Give it a go!
